...because there's no decent link, here's the text:
Birders have fun as festival begins
By The Associated Press March 30, 2006
HILDALGO, Texas- Birds and butterflies were the center of attention Thursday as the Texas Tropics Nature Festival kicked off in the Rio Grande Valley.
The four-day event sponsored by the McAllen Chamber of Commerce is in its 10th year and includes canoe trips, nature preserve and ranch excursions and seminars.
A dark-colored olive sparrow had bird-watchers in canoes on the Rio Grande in the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge scrambling for their binoculars.
"It's one of the South Texas specialties," Heidi Trudell, a 20-year-old refuge intern, said in Friday's editions of The Monitor. "People come from all over to see them."
Bird tweets and shrieks and their human equivalents filled the air along more than a two-mile stretch of the river, the newspaper reported.
The canoeists also spotted a green kingfisher, a grey hawk and a blue-grey green heron on Thursday's trip.
About 200 people have registered for the festival, which is expected to generate about $10,000 in the local economy.
........hehehehehe, we had GREAT BLUE and GREEN herons; probably even BLUE-GRAY gnatcatchers. silly people. yeah, i know the article is pushing 4 yrs old, but still. it never caught my eye while self-googling before.
so, hi 2010, i hope we get along better than 2009 and i did. |

my spouse and our puppy = yay
the rest of things, eh, anticlimatic. but at least it's almost a new year. and as much as this year has been really, really good... some bits of it have been really, really tough. i'd never trade it for the world, but i'm certainly ready to put a little time between 2009 and myself. |
